Training Guide for First-Time Use of a Cat Harness

Introducing your cat to a harness for the first time can be a gradual process, so patience is key. Here are some steps to help make the transition smoother for your cat:

  1. Familiarisation:

    • When your harness arrives, place it in a familiar area for your cat to sniff and inspect. Avoid placing it in their safe spaces.
    • Encourage your cat with pats and treats as they investigate the harness.
  2. Introduction Inside the Home:

    • Once your cat is comfortable with the harness being in their space, try putting it on them inside the home. This controlled environment will make the process easier.
    • Let your cat walk around indoors with the harness on before attaching a leash and heading outside.
  3. Putting on the Harness:

    • Gently hold your cat and encourage them with pats and rubs.
    • Slowly fit the belly band around their torso, leaving a finger's width of space between their body and the harness.
    • Continue giving chin scratches to keep your cat calm.
    • Secure the neck band, again leaving a finger's width of space between their neck and the harness.
  4. Adjustment Period:

    • It's common for cats to fall over when first wearing a harness due to a survival response or because the harness is too tight.
    • Use highly attractive treats and lots of praise to help them overcome this.
    • Don’t be disheartened if your cat doesn’t take to the harness immediately. If you rush the process, they may become anxious.
    • Do not, under any circumstances, drag your cat. This irritates them through their guard hairs.
  5. Take It Slow:

    • Remember, small steps are essential to achieving big goals. Be patient and persistent, allowing your cat to gradually get used to the harness.
